Criticalness of Being Connected in College

It is important for college students to be involved and engaged on their campus. Being affiliated with some type of club or team on campus always has its benefits. It can help with social skills or even help with job positions in the long run. It can also be a confidence booster, and outlet to express one’s self. College connectedness is a vital asset to a college students life. Connectedness according to Rovai (2002) is “the feeling of belonging and the creation of bonding relationships.”

Self esteem is another important aspect in the life of a college student. Lots of college freshman go into college and come out of college almost two completely different people. It can be hard and eventful to find your identity. Searching for the purpose of life remains an end goal for most college students. Every one ask themselves, “What’s my Purpose?” Surrounding yourself around the right people and becoming involved on campus can help answer that question.

A chunk of the college experience is the involvement on campus. Whether that be being on a sports team or some type of club on campus. Also it can simply be the friends that a student has. Memories are made with experiences that are affiliated with College connectedness

In College Connectedness: The Student Perspective it says, “Connectedness may be divided into two types. Students may feel connected through satisfaction with interpersonal relationships and various social groups (Cutrona, 1982; Rovai, 2002).” Whatever way a student decides to become engaged regardless if its, through systemic ways at schools, athletic teams, or friends, it is vital that a college student strive to be connected for better mental health and overall well being.
